I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Here we are!
After months (literally!) spent thinking about names for this blog, I can’t believe I’m finally writing the first post.
I thought really hard about how to start. A simple introduction? Something funny? A review? Like my dad says: you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.
Well, after a lot of thinking, I’ve decided to throw all plans out of the window (sorry dad).
This blog is born for me. Writing online is something I was doing when blogging was not cool and Chiara Ferragni didn’t have millions of followers around the globe. At the time, I was blogging on a platform called “Splinder”, chosen purely because it reminded me of Splinter Sensei, from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (yes, nerd much). I was pouring my uninteresting life in that blog, and I felt good about it.
Splinder doesn’t exist anymore and nowadays things have changed so much. There are millions of blogs out there, talking about food, fashion, travels and everything in between. Blogs now are actual businesses and people pay bills writing.
This small space I’ve created doesn’t pretend to be the next Big Blog Hit and surely I’m not quitting my job anytime soon. The only thing I want to do is write, because something didn’t change: writing makes me feel damn good. I’m not going to tell you about my school misfortunes, but I will talk about London, the city that was only a picture in a school book when I was a teenager. I’m going to write about books, movies, musicals, my travels around the world… this and that, all little things that make my life mine.
This is also where the blog’s name comes from. From the Cambridge Dictionary:
Patchwork [pætʃ.wɜːk/]: cloth made by sewing together a lot of smaller pieces of cloth with different patterns and colours.
But also: “A mixture of different things”.
And my blog will be a mixture of different things, exactly like my life is a mixture of this and that. Pieces of cloth different in shapes and colors, they might not look like much at first. But if you combine them together, they end up creating something new and unique.
Welcome to A Patchwork Life.
And to start this blog with the right foot (meaning you didn’t just spend 10 minutes of your life reading about nothing): “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship” is the ending line of one of my favorite movies: Casablanca.
